PROJECT INFORMATION
ABOUT THE LOCATION
Construction kicked off in June 2024 for Johnson County’s Sunflower Fire Station, located in South De Soto, Kansas. The 9-acre site is east of Lexington Avenue and north of a new 102nd Street extension. The Sunflower Redevelopment Group contributed the site.
ABOUT THE BUILDING
McCownGordon, working with SFS Architecture, is constructing the 19,355-square-foot facility. The facility will house personnel from Northwest Consolidated Fire District and Johnson County MED-ACT. Outside the building will be 40 parking spaces, and inside the building will be:
• 10 responder bunks• Double-length vehicle apparatus bays
• Community room
• Office spaces
• Staff day room
• Kitchen
• Fitness space
• Responder and facility support rooms
FUNDING & STATUS
More than $9 million for the station’s creation was contributed from the neighboring Panasonic Energy Corporation of North America electric vehicle battery manufacturing plant, also currently under construction.
The Johnson County Board of County Commissioners approved $15 million for support of the project, with $7.5 million for improvements to road infrastructure near the fire station and Panasonic plant, and $7.5 million to build and equip the Sunflower Fire Station. This infrastructure investment agreement plan will aid in enhancing safety for the community.
Status: The project remains on schedule for substantial completion in late 2025.
